March the beginning of Spring

Thank goodness March is finally here, it’s one of my favourite months as it heralds the start of Spring. The daffodils and crocuses are in full bloom and the birds are very busy in the nest boxes which are all around the gardens. The sheep which a local farmer puts on our fields for the winter have now left to have their lambs at home and hopefully the deer will make an appearance again soon.

February was another exceedingly busy month, I don’t think we had many days when we did not have a ‘full house’ of guests. Our lovely Bengal family, which have been with us since before Christmas go home next week. We shall miss them terribly as they are such fun and always looking for mischief! We have had a few new faces staying this month and it is always lovely to watch their character’s come through once they realise we are not the vets!

Percy, our gorgeous miniature donkey, turned two last week. He had plenty of treats, especially digestive biscuits of which he is particularly partial. He is still enjoying his therapy training and we are now saving up for a small horsebox so that we can take him out. All the other donkeys are very well, but look a bit tatty with their thick woolly coats.

We have a slightly quieter month in March, we are even taking a few days away – we don’t know where yet, as with the amount of animals we have we don’t like to plan too much in advance. The cat hotel is shut from the 21st – 26th, it will feel very odd, but lovely to have a few days away.

Wishing everyone a happy month and I’ll speak to you all once the temperature has risen!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone, may all your hopes and dreams come true in 2017. We have had an extremely busy Christmas, but it was hugely enjoyable due to having such lovely guests to stay. They all had a stocking to open on Christmas morning and then the three Bengals had a great game of ‘who can climb the Christmas tree fastest’!! We are already fully booked for next Christmas with all of our lovely favourites coming to stay.

The donkeys have been such stars over Christmas. Percy accompanied me on a fancy dress morning held at our running club. Our group won first prize as a nativity scene complete with real donkey and Percy was the star of the show. We have started training him and he loves learning new tricks, he waits for me at the gate each day so that he can come out and perform! Our new donkey Misty has settled in well and is always with Charlie, he still pretends he doesn’t like her when I am there, but goes looking for her when he can’t see her.

We rehomed 12 ex commercial birds in early Dec and they are delightful. They are so confident already and will march straight into the house if we leave the door open. The cats adore watching them during the day as they are such entertaining birds.

Our diary is filling up quickly for the year ahead, for some dates in February we are already full. If you have any dates you would like held please let us know soon as this looks like a very busy year. We would like to thank everyone for using us in 2016, we adore all of your cats and feel very privileged to be able to care for them all.

I must go, I have a cat called Harmony who insists that I sit and read with her in the afternoon…….

November Over

Why do winter months always last longer than summer months?! We have had a quieter month, which has allowed us to decorate some of the suites and have a good tidy up in the gardens. Our first Christmas cat arrived last week and we have three more arriving over the next week. Our Christmas tree is now up and all the cats presents are wrapped up underneath. We have such fun putting the tree up and trying to wrap as the cats always ‘help’! One of our guests, ‘Ally’ managed to put claw marks down a whole roll of wrapping paper and every time I would lay it out he would throw himself in it!! We have some amazing guest staying at the moment and it is so lovely to see how warm and relaxed they are. When I go in first thing the heating is so warm and the cats are always so comfortable, I am so proud of how well the hotel works for the cats as playing with them in their suites is what keeps them and us happy. We love being with the cats throughout the day and they never get put to bed before 9pm. Their heating is on 24 hrs and we always leave them with a night light once the main lights are off.

The donkeys are all well and we have a new arrival! Her name is Misty and she is nearly 3. Her previous owner wanted to find a permanent home for her and a mutual friend put her in touch with us. She arrived three weeks ago and after some additional problems, with her adjusting to living in a group, she is settling in well. She is a white donkey like Charlie and they look incredibly cute together! The donkeys, sheep and goats love their new barn and spend most of their time in there, much to the delight of the cats who find them highly amusing!

We have 12 new hens joining our family on Saturday. They are ex commercial birds, who once they reach a certain age are slaughtered due to their egg production dropping. Fortunately, there are fantastic groups around who find homes for these girls and we are very much looking forward to meeting ours. This is the third lot we have taken over the last 10 years and we highly recommend it as they are such characters. The cats love to watch the chickens and ducks and they are such peaceful birds to have around, we normally have eggs to give away in the spring so bring a tub if you would like any.

Bookings are coming in daily for next year. February, Easter and May are booking up fast at the moment, so if you need any dates held please let us know as soon as possible.

Please do not be offended by our second year of no Christmas cards, we have joined the ranks of giving the money to charity instead and have this year decided to support Freshstartforhens who found our girls for us.

I must get back up to my lovely guests. Wishing you all wonderful Christmas and may all your dreams come true.

Jackie xx

May Madness

I have no idea where May went, if only January would go so fast! The farm looks absolutely wonderful at the moment. All of the oak trees are a deep green and we awash with young birds. Our hayfields are a haven for wildlife and are a lovely sanctuary for the baby pheasants and rabbits to play in.

We have had another really busy month and have had amazing guests. We currently have a family of eight cats who have just arrived, it’s always lovely to see how quickly they settle in and I am besotted with them all. Another amazing guest is our first Sphynx cat called Kermit – what a huge character he is, whenever I bend over to clean he is instantly on my back and he purrs like a train!

Our new Persian rehome girls are settling in with us indoors, although Doumy, our old cat is being incredibly bossy with them and they spend most of their time in or dining room. Hopefully with time they will all settle down as we do love them.

The donkeys are all loosing their winter coats and I think most of the birds in the lane have a nest made of donkey hair! Our pet sheep have just be shorn and are much happier without their huge winter coats.

We now have very limited space left for the summer and are now taking bookings from the 8th September onwards. Christmas is fully booked with a waiting list which is lovely as it is all of our favourites staying.

The sun is shining outside and there is plenty of cat sunbathing going on – I have the most perfect job in the world 🙂

April fun at Hotel Cat

Wow, where has April gone?! What a busy month and what a lovely one. It’s been so lovely to see the oak trees turning green and our cherry trees are laden with gorgeous blossom.

We have had another really busy month and we could do with double the amount of rooms for May as we have had to turn so many people away. We have happy/sad news about our three long term cats, Sebastian, Stella and Sweep, their owner has decided to rehome them. We were going to take them on as we thought we were going to lose our precious Doumy, but as she continues to enjoy good health it has been decided that it would be kinder to let the cats find another home. As I write Sebastian looks as though he has landed on his feet with a lovely home offered and I will let everyone know about the girls this week. If anyone knows somebody who may be interested in two beautiful short haired Persians, one who is a lap cat and one who is partially sighted but who adores games, please get in touch. As you can imagine it is going to be very hard for us to see them go as they have become part of the family and I know they have a huge fan club with our regular customers.

On a happier note we can announce the arrival of Arthur the miniature donkey and our newest member of entertainment staff :-). To say he is adorable is an understatement and he has settled straight in with the other boys so well. As you can imagine with the cats and donkeys to entertain I don’t get a lot done in a day, but I do smile a lot!! If you would like to come and meet Arthur please feel free to drop in, he does adore a neck scratch and is quite partial to a digestive biscuit…….

We have had another amazing mix of cats in this month and have had four families of three in at the same time – lots of cats to entertain! I adore seeing the cats relax and explore their suites and love it when the shy ones come for a fuss – I totally adore the cat hotel and wouldn’t swap my life for anything. The most stressful job I have is getting breakfast out on time as the cats are Very demanding in the morning!

Look forward to meeting our new guests and seeing our old favourites soon,

Jackie xx

Spring arrives at Hotel Cat

It’s lovely to say that Spring has finally arrived as winter seemed to go on and on. The birds are nesting in the boxes outside the cat windows and are emptying the feeders as quickly as we can fill them. I love this time of year as everything is so fresh and positive and we have a great year to look forward to. We are filling up quickly now for the summer, with both old and new guests coming to stay. Easter is fully booked with a lovely bunch of cats who are going to be very indulged with lots of treats, toys and a home cooked Easter Day lunch menu consisting of salmon, turkey and prawns – I think I am going to be very popular that day!

Our new cat climbing units are being well used and the cats love them, they certainly look very smart in the Royal Mews suites. We have the gorgeous kitten Gibbs staying for a couple of weeks whilst his Mum is in hospital, he is adorable and his antics keep all the other cats highly entertained – he certainly loves to play. We had our first pair of pure bred Norwegian Forest cats in for a couple of weeks last month and I have to say I am in love with the breed. They were incredibly loving and so laid back, we really did enjoy their company, hopefully we will have more coming to stay.

Our cat Doumy is (touch wood) doing really well and is currently say next to me in the sunshine. Arthur the donkey is joining the family at the end of this week and we are all really looking forward to his arrival.

I must go there are cats to be entertained!

Merry Christmas from Hotel Cat

We would like to start by wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a very Happy and Healthy New Year. We have had a fabulous year in the company of the greatest cats and have loved every minute of it. We have lots of ideas for 2016 and I know the cats will all approve!

Our first Christmas guests are here and more arrive over the next few days. Our guests this month have loved the Christmas tree and the favourite game is to hide underneath it and pounce on the first thing they see (usually the broom!). Every guest has a present already wrapped for them and we can’t wait to play with their new toys with them. We have a 6 month old Abyssinian kitten who is having  her first stay with us, I can imagine she is going to be swamped with cuddles if I know my family! We also have our first Elvis, what a great name!

We decided to stop sending Christmas cards last year and donate to charity instead. This year we have donated to the local hospice and an animal charity in Ireland. We do however hope that everyone has a fantastic Christmas and that all the cats have hours of fun playing in the empty boxes and wrapping paper, whilst ignoring their new purpose made cat toys :-).

This will be the first Christmas with our new boys Percy and Stan. They are both so lovely and bring such joy to everyone who meets them. Percy will be spreading joy in 2016 by showing up in care homes, we are also hoping that we will be allowed to take him to local hospitals and hospices. He is such a clever boy and has mastered ‘high five’ – front leg up and ‘who do you do’ – he shakes hoofs. He also knows ‘cuddles’ and ‘kisses’ and ‘sit’, where he will sit down on my lap and believe me he weighs a lot! Stan enjoys watching Percy, but is not interested in tricks and is wary of strangers (whereas Percy walks straight between their legs whether they are expecting it or not!). Stan will stay with the big donkeys and we also have another mini donkey joining us in February – all will be revealed soon :-).

Many thanks for reading and have a wonderful rest of the year.

October at the Cat Hotel

October 23, 2015

What a lovely month October is, the colour of the trees here in the New Forest are stunning and I adore Autumn. The cats are all warm and snug in the cat hotel. The heating is now on and stays on 24hrs a day now until Spring brings warmer weather.

We have had another really busy month, with another lot of beautiful cats, some who have stayed before and a few new ones. It’s really lovely to have such a lot of repeat customers as the cats know us so well and we treat them as our own whilst they are here. We also love meeting the new cats who come to stay, this month we had a darling boy called Gus. Gus has a gastric problem and is often sick, because of this he has to have numerous small meals throughout the day. This is not a problem as we are with the cats right through until at least 9pm at night and Gus settled in really well. We have also been extremely lucky to have two kittens staying this month. Kittens are definitely a perk of the ‘job’! The first one was Callie a 20 week old British Exotic who is just adorable and the second one is Charlie, our first Scottish Fold who is 16 weeks. They adore all the fuss and games that is lavished on them and it is so heart warming to see them so content.

We have had three families of Bengals stay this month, Tabitha and Poppy who have stayed before, new faces Tig and Ted and another new boy Jax. Poppy and Tabitha are beautiful girls with stunning markings and settled back into the hotel straight away. Tig and Ted are 11 month old Toygers and were hilarious and so mischievous, their antics kept us so amused and we hope they enjoyed staying as much as we enjoyed having them. The last one is Jax and 8 month old ‘lad’. He was again so full of character and such a joy to be around with his enthusiasm for everything. When his Mum and Dad arrived to collect him he was tearing around with excitement as he wanted to show them everything he had been up to – I just adore them all. This week we have four different families of Persians, so the hotel has a much calmer feel! It’s funny how it changes, one week nearly every cat is black and white, another week all tabby, the next all pedigree, it’s so interesting and fascinating to be around the different breeds and characters.

We genuinely adore looking after the cats and we are so glad that we kept the cat hotel so small. Having just the seven rooms means that we know every cat inside out and they know us so well too. We never wanted to build an empire that was run by staff, I love that when I get a phone call asking how a certain cat has settled, I can answer knowing exactly how they are as it is me who has been with them. I also love the fact that worried parents can ask me questions that may seem over the top to some people. I am so over the top with my four legged friends, be they cats, dogs, donkeys etc. that I totally understand peoples concerns when it comes to their animals.

We have another busy month coming up in November and I am really looking forward to seeing a lot of familiar faces coming back to stay. Must go now as my guests will be waiting for their mid morning entertainment to start!

Busy September at our luxury Cat Hotel

Wow, what a busy first summer! We have been flat out, enjoying the company of all the amazing cats coming to stay at Hotel Cat. Once again, we have had an assortment of breeds and colours, some arrive as bold as brass and totally relaxed, whilst others need a quiet introduction and lots of reassurance to help them settle in. I have to say that I pinch myself everyday at how lucky I am to spend all day in the company of animals, especially the cats. I love opening the hotel each morning and the lovely greetings I get from my sleepy guests. I can normally be found with a cat on my lap, chatting away on what is going on in the world – they don’t seem to mind my chit chat and I receive lots of head bumps and purrs!

With September now upon us with it’s chilly evenings, the heating is now switched on at night, I like to know that all my guests are warm and snug at bedtime. We have extended the donkey barn so that the cats on the left of the hotel can see the donkeys in the barn from their garden room windows. The donkeys also love this as they are so nosy!

We have a busy couple of months ahead of us and then Christmas brings lots of favourites, plus a couple of new guests, so lots to look forward to.

We have had a tour done of the hotel for people who live too far away to visit, I will try and put it on the website, but may have to wait until my website lady returns from holiday! Here is the link in the meantime Hotel Cat Map

Everyone is enjoying meeting Percy Pinkerton the miniature donkey and he adores all the attention. He is hard at work each day keeping the cats entertained by playing with his friend Magic and rounding up the chickens!

We are taking lots of booking for 2016, so if you have any dates you would like reserved let us know now to avoid disappointment.

Thanks for reading,

Our television debut

Did many of you see us featured on the documentary 90 cats and counting? It was about various people who love cats, including a lady who has 90 of them. She takes in unwanted cats and rehomes them, such a lovely dedicated lady, she must work tirelessly. We were featured as they liked the story of how we built the cat hotel before we spent any money on the house. We moved into Downlands Farm in October 2013 and it needs so much doing to it that we didn’t really know where to start. We spent all of our savings on the Hotel Cat and are very proud of what we have achieved. It is a very tranquil hotel and you feel so calm as soon as you enter. The gardens leading to Hotel Cat were overgrown paddock land which we have transformed ourselves by hand, we still have lots that we want to do, but love how it is looking already. Our house will always be a work in progress, but we have at least had a few new windows put in last month – no more wearing a scarf on the sofa at night this winter!

We have been extremely fortunate with the amount of publicity we have had, Your Cat featured us in their magazine this month and it has really helped us become known quickly. We adore running Hotel Cat and love meeting people who are as passionate about their cats as we are. We now have a large number of regular visitors, some of whom were young kittens when we first met them and who are now approaching their first Birthdays. We love them all, regardless of breed, age or colour, each cat is so very unique and we are very privileged to be part of their world.

We had another visit to see Percy Pinkerton this week. He can come and live with us next month and we can’t wait. He has grown into a really bonny boy and is just so laid back about everything. We aim to train him as a therapy donkey so that we can take him to care homes and hopefully children’s hospitals. He has already gone to his first donkey show and also met 40 children at a pre-school visit. His new paddock is right next to the cat hotel so everyone who arrives will be able to meet him and have a cuddle. Our other four donkeys are looking really lovely, Holly and Charlie have their full summer coats and are gleaming in the sunshine, I wonder what they will make of their new playmate :-).
