Hopefully as I write this we will start to see warmer weather on the horizon! Tim and I had our first holiday together in 28 years last week, we decided to go to the Lake District but came home after four days as it was heaving with people. We’ve decided that the occasional night away is plenty as we both love where we live so much.

The Cat Hotel has been so busy again and we have many bookings coming in everyday. It’s so lovely to see how quickly the cats settle in and the new cat towers are extremely popular. The outside of the hotel has been painted and the gardens are looking so good. We now have new electric gates at the entrance, which not only look good, but are great security and mean that Tim and I now don’t have to be on gate duty!

The donkeys are all happy and enjoying all the grass. Arthur has had another treatment on his eye as the tumour started to grow again, but this treatment seems to have worked. He’s such a little star and takes it all in his stride. Stan now has asthma! He is currently on 40 steroid tablets a day – he was on 80! He is going to have an inhaler next week, it will be interesting to see how that goes as he is such a worrier. Our two sheep have just had their 13th birthdays and although they are a little stiff in the morning, are doing really well.

Our three cats are all doing really well, Sweep has just turned 15, Stella and Nou are 14. I do get broody everytime a kitten comes in, especially if it’s a tortoiseshell!

Do give me any dates with as much notice as you can to guarantee a room as we don’t like to have to say no.

Summer 2022

I can’t believe it’s been over six months since I’ve written, all I can say is that it’s been crazy busy with no time to sit down!

We have had and are continuing to have, a really busy year. We have been fully booked for months and have no space now until the end of October, we are fully booked for Christmas too. We have so many bookings in for next year and for 2024 already, please, if you have any dates you would like held please let us know as soon as possible.

We are so blessed to have the loveliest cats who stay with us and we adore them all. During the recent hot weather the cat hotel stayed really cool as it is so well insulated, we spent all day up there as it was the coolest place on the farm! We also have the loveliest cat parents, a couple have recently had to cancel with short notice due to illness and both have paid in full, even though it was not their fault. Such kindness means a lot and does us help keep all our rehomed animals fit and well as they always come first.

We have incredibly sad news that our darling donkey Holly died on the 12th May. She had Colic and by the time I found her in the morning at 7am it was too late and we had to make the awful decision to let her go. She was our first ever donkey that we rehomed in 2006. She was the kindest most beautiful soul and we miss her terribly. Her son Charlie is still a bit lost as they had never been apart, but we are spending a lot of time with him and may well look to rehome a friend for him at some point in the future as the other four donkeys are both pairs, even though they do get on well as a group. Holly is buried in the paddock outside the kitchen window where she liked to stand and watch us, I shall miss that little face forever.

Arthur, our little Mediterranean Miniature donkey is having treatment for a tumour which is just under his eye. He has to have injections into it, so far he has had four and he has four more to go. Hopefully this will work, he’s such a lovely little man and being so brave. We have wonderful donkey vets who spend a lot of time making sure he is comfortable both before and after the injection and do really care and we are so grateful to them. All the other donkeys, sheep and ponies are really well thank goodness!

We recently rehomed a few more chickens so the cats have plenty of entertainment outside their windows which they love. Our bird feeders which are outside the cats windows are being filled twice a day as we have so many birds and lots of babies.

Our hay has now been cut and we have had another delivery of straw so the barn is full of feed for the animals. Our resident deer has had two more babies and they are living in the field behind the donkey paddock. There is a fresh water spring which forms a small pond in the corner of this field, plus we planted a small woodland there so she has shelter, its always a treat to see her. We also have two young buzzards again this year, they have a nest in one of our oak trees and are always calling their parents for food! We adore living here and sharing our lives with so many different animals and nature.

Hope you and your beautiful animals are all staying cool and keeping well. I’m back up to sit with my beautiful guests, yes, I really am living my best life 🙂

Happy New Year!

2019 is here and fortunately January seems to be going quite quickly instead of dragging it’s heels! It is a cold but clear day here and we are hoping that there will be no snow for us this year.

We had such an incredibly busy and fun year in 2018, although the building works in the house were very trying, thank goodness they are now finished, never again!

2019 Looks like it is going to be our busiest year yet. We have shown so many new people around the Hotel since the start of the month and everyone is booking dates and they are very enthusiastic which is lovely. Fortunately most of our regular favourites have already secured their places and the diary is full in quite a few places.

My big news this month is that I have chosen the charity which I am going to raise money for by running the London Marathon in April. The charity is the Celia Hammond Animal Trust. I researched a number of charities as I wanted the majority of the money raised to go directly towards the animals and fell for this charity straight away. Please have a look at their website as they are passionate animal lovers who work tirelessly to help and support in everyway they can. I have set up a Just Giving page which is https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jackieferrier  if you have a minute have a read of my story and I will update the page regularly.

The donkeys are all really well and spend the majority of the time in their barn next to the Cat Hotel eating and sleeping! The cats are fascinated by the donkeys and spend hours on their outside cat trees watching them. They are very fat, woolly coated and extremely cuddly and are so lovely to be with, both donkeys and cats are such peaceful animals and the calm effect they give is wonderful, I really don’t know how people cope with working in cities!

We have had a busy January filled with lovely guests who are all warm and snug in their spacious bedrooms. It is always lovely and toasty in the Hotel as the heating is left on 24 hrs a day and it is the perfect place to escape with my book leaving Tim in the house to answer the phone.

My Marathon training is going well and so far to plan. I am actually enjoying the training far more than I thought I would. I have a great friend coaching me and we are increasing mileage weekly. This week we have a 14 mile run on Sunday, last weeks was 12 miles which we did in 1hr 55 minutes. For those who also run we averaged 9.38 pace which I am thrilled with. At the moment I am hoping to complete the Marathon in under 4hrs 30mins, but obviously this is dependant on how training goes and what the weather is like on the day.

Right, I have my book and I’m back up to my gorgeous guests,

Jackie xx
