What a fantastic end to the month, much overdue sunshine! It makes Spring feel like it has arrived and the farm is starting to wake up from it’s winter slumbers. We have been busy preparing for Spring and have been planting new beech hedging which the birds will love once it has established.

The Cat Hotel has had another busy month and the diary is full for a number of dates throughout the year already. We have had a few new faces stay recently and have the most unusually marked girl staying called Sunshine. She is ginger and white with large pure tabby sections and we have never seen another cat like her. It is a first stay for both her and her brother and they have settled straight away which is just so lovely. We said goodbye to Lucifer, Salem and Yogi yesterday which was very sad. They had been staying here since November and we adored them as they were all such characters, it’s always sad when favourites leave and is the only downside of the ‘job’.

The donkeys are loving the milder weather and are outside much more, running around and looking for mischief. I take Percy for walks around the lanes as he loves all the attention, last weekend he did a four mile walk which involved stopping at the shop to buy him an apple and he was full of himself all the way. When we meet a horse rider he gets so excited and wants to join them, but the horses are not impressed!!

My London Marathon training is going well, although my feet don’t think so! We are now up to 18 miles on our long runs. I cannot tell you how exhausting it is, but it will be worth it on the day and the fact that I am raising money for such a good cause makes it much easier. If anyone would like to sponsor me here is the page www.justgiving/jackieferrier

Wishing you all a wonderful month,

Jackie xx

November at the Cat Hotel

It’s so beautiful outside at the moment that it’s hard to believe it’s Christmas next month. Normally I am really organised and have done most of my shopping, but what with the building works going on in the house I am way behind. I am hoping to start preparing for Christmas next week as (hopefully!) the builders will have finished. It has been a long few months and the cats and the hotel have been a godsend.

We have had another really busy year and start to quieten down from next week, Tim and I are even having a couple of days away in London which we are really looking forward to. We have had a couple of new guests staying this month and have had our first guest called Graham! What a great name and he is such a gorgeous boy who will flop down on your feet for a fuss, I really do love my guests.

The donkeys are all well and getting much thicker coats in readiness for the cold weather. They are spending far longer in their barn and wait in the warm for their daily digestive biscuits rather than coming down to the paddock where they can watch us through the windows – it’s a real guilt trip if you fancy a sneaky coffee before going out to see them!

The cat hotel is always lovely and warm as the heating is never turned off whilst a guest is in the room and it’s so relaxing to be with the cats. I have two pairs of young cats staying at the moment so I had better get back up to entertain them before they wake up the older guests!

Long Summer Nights

What a fantastic summer we are having, day after day of beautiful sunshine – we could get used to this!

June was another busy month and the cats love watching the young birds from their suites. It seems like a really good year for the young birds and all our bird boxes have had two lots of young already. It looks like it will be a bumper harvest on the hedgerows and fruit trees too. Our sloe bushes, blackberry bushes and elderflower trees are showing signs of plenty of berries. Our apple and damson trees have a huge crop of fruit and the hazel trees in the hedges have nuts in abundance.  All the birds, squirrels and mice will have plenty of supplies. We managed to get our hay cut and stored in the barn ready for winter, which is always a huge relief as we are so reliant on the British weather.

I know a number of cats who come to stay have been rehomed into their now very loving homes and I must share our story of rehoming with you. We always try and offer a home to as many animals as we reasonably can and in the winter of 2009 we were asked to rehome a pair of donkeys which had travelled over from Portugal. They had both had very tough lives and suffered terrible abuse. Basil was the oldest, estimated by our vets to be between 30 and 35 years old and Cookie the younger of the two at a mere 20-25 years. Basil was a cantankerous old man and we believe his tough character kept him going so long, he had a loving retirement with us and passed away in Dec 2015. Cookie has always been a complex donkey, never wanting any affection and being terribly head shy. He has never wanted anything to do with us, but is inseparable from Holly our original donkey. We would catch him whenever he needed to see the farrier or vet and that could be a real work up, other than that we left him to choose to do whatever he wanted. Numerous times I have faced his teeth or back legs if he felt that I was invading his space. Unbelievably, this spring after over eight years of being with us he has learnt to trust, I cannot tell you how much this means. After not wanting to ever be groomed he now loves it and will push in to be done over again. He has had three showers and shampoos to keep him cool and will stand patiently waiting for his massage. I can after eight years walk into the field and catch him straight away, in fact he is normally waiting for me at the gate when he sees me. Best of all he loves his nose kissed and will leave the others for extra fuss. It just goes to show that some animals take more time than others to let go of ‘baggage’ from their past, but the rewards when they do are worth more than all the money in the world.

Right, I must go and entertain my lovely guests. I have three gorgeous Bengals who do love a good game and Florence and Ravello will be expecting their cuddles, Ali will want to try and climb in my skin and then fall asleep in my lap and Colin (17) and Minky (18) will want gentle fuss and just to be with us.

Have a wonderful month and lets hope this sunshine continues :-).

August Days

What a gorgeous month August has been, we have had so much sunshine and have loved every minute!

We have been so busy in the Cat Hotel this month, lots of regular faces and a few new ones. We had two Siberian kittens stay with us for three weeks, they were the most laid back boys and so much fun. We have also, finally, had our first Siamese guest, ‘Lady’, she is a beautiful girl and loves to snuggle up on your lap. She has king prawns for breakfast each day and will talk to you for more!

Our new girls Stella and Sweep are loving be able to go outside and are always in the garden. Stella has managed to catch two birds and just this morning I found the pair of them playing with a mouse in the lounge. Fortunately it was still alive so it was taken out to the front garden where it scampered away. Doumy, our old girl, is still going strong and is usually found lying in the sun in the front garden.

The donkeys love this time of year as they love the harvest. They pick the blackberries off of the hedgerows and beg mercilessly for the fallen apples to be given to them. Our damson trees have not had much fruit and what there was has been eaten by the birds, it’s lovely that nothing goes to waste.

The deer are back in our fields and we have spotted one baby, hopefully they will stay as they are safe on our land.

We have a very busy couple of months coming up, but things do ease off in November. We have lots of bookings coming in for 2017 and if you have any holidays planned please let us know as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.

Back off now to play with my lovely guests, being with the cats each day is so perfect and I feel so lucky that we can do this in such a gorgeous place.

May Madness

I have no idea where May went, if only January would go so fast! The farm looks absolutely wonderful at the moment. All of the oak trees are a deep green and we awash with young birds. Our hayfields are a haven for wildlife and are a lovely sanctuary for the baby pheasants and rabbits to play in.

We have had another really busy month and have had amazing guests. We currently have a family of eight cats who have just arrived, it’s always lovely to see how quickly they settle in and I am besotted with them all. Another amazing guest is our first Sphynx cat called Kermit – what a huge character he is, whenever I bend over to clean he is instantly on my back and he purrs like a train!

Our new Persian rehome girls are settling in with us indoors, although Doumy, our old cat is being incredibly bossy with them and they spend most of their time in or dining room. Hopefully with time they will all settle down as we do love them.

The donkeys are all loosing their winter coats and I think most of the birds in the lane have a nest made of donkey hair! Our pet sheep have just be shorn and are much happier without their huge winter coats.

We now have very limited space left for the summer and are now taking bookings from the 8th September onwards. Christmas is fully booked with a waiting list which is lovely as it is all of our favourites staying.

The sun is shining outside and there is plenty of cat sunbathing going on – I have the most perfect job in the world 🙂

April fun at Hotel Cat

Wow, where has April gone?! What a busy month and what a lovely one. It’s been so lovely to see the oak trees turning green and our cherry trees are laden with gorgeous blossom.

We have had another really busy month and we could do with double the amount of rooms for May as we have had to turn so many people away. We have happy/sad news about our three long term cats, Sebastian, Stella and Sweep, their owner has decided to rehome them. We were going to take them on as we thought we were going to lose our precious Doumy, but as she continues to enjoy good health it has been decided that it would be kinder to let the cats find another home. As I write Sebastian looks as though he has landed on his feet with a lovely home offered and I will let everyone know about the girls this week. If anyone knows somebody who may be interested in two beautiful short haired Persians, one who is a lap cat and one who is partially sighted but who adores games, please get in touch. As you can imagine it is going to be very hard for us to see them go as they have become part of the family and I know they have a huge fan club with our regular customers.

On a happier note we can announce the arrival of Arthur the miniature donkey and our newest member of entertainment staff :-). To say he is adorable is an understatement and he has settled straight in with the other boys so well. As you can imagine with the cats and donkeys to entertain I don’t get a lot done in a day, but I do smile a lot!! If you would like to come and meet Arthur please feel free to drop in, he does adore a neck scratch and is quite partial to a digestive biscuit…….

We have had another amazing mix of cats in this month and have had four families of three in at the same time – lots of cats to entertain! I adore seeing the cats relax and explore their suites and love it when the shy ones come for a fuss – I totally adore the cat hotel and wouldn’t swap my life for anything. The most stressful job I have is getting breakfast out on time as the cats are Very demanding in the morning!

Look forward to meeting our new guests and seeing our old favourites soon,

Jackie xx

We have a new member of staff joining our family in August. He passed his interview with flying colours and his official post is Head of Entertainment – we believe he will do very well in this post. His name is Percy Pinkerton and we are very much looking forward to his arrival. I have attached a photo of his interview with Tim……..

We have had a very busy few weeks with lots of lovely cats coming to stay. We fall in love with all of them as they are all heart stealers, but Frog the Devon Rex had us wrapped firmly around her tiny paws! She was only 6 months old and it was her first visit to us. She had so much fun and kept us so entertained with her crazy antics. In true cat fashion her favourite toy was the wire from a champagne cork, we would throw it and she would fetch it back for us each time, so very cute.

Spring is bursting to life all around us and the birds are very busy. We have a couple of blue tits nesting in one of the boxes which is right outside the Royal Mews bedroom window. I don’t know who is more absorbed by them, us or the cats!

We have a fun filled Easter planned with a cat themed Easter egg hunt for all the lovely guests we have booked in. We are always on the lookout for new ways to keep the cats busy between naps!

February 2015 at Hotel Cat

It’s lovely to meet the new cats coming in this month. We are full for the whole month and over half full for March already. We have a range of different cats and different breeds coming to stay. We have just had our first hairless cat, a Peterbald called Baggins. He was such a big character and we all totally fell in love with him. We keep the heating on 24hrs a day and it is a constant 22 degrees or 71 in Fahrenheit. He was toasty warm in his suite and we missed his lovely personality and cuddles when he went home. February brings more kittens, which are always so much fun and also a couple of real senior citizens – so much to look forward to.
We have had another newspaper out today and as usual they couldn’t believe their eyes! We do love seeing people’s first reaction to the hotel, I guess we are so used to the cats having such luxury that it is second nature to us.
We have added a couple of new DVD’s to the cats personal selections. These DVD’s are designed especially for cats and we had one of our guests meowing to the cat on the TV today, they are so amusing and we certainly love our job ♥.
We are having our hallway turning into a giant virtual fishpond soon and I can’t wait to show you the videos. We love searching for new ways to keep the cats entertained and they certainly keep us on our toes. We have a family of four young Bengals and Bengal crosses who come to stay, they are such a fun family and always come armed with new toys. Their best one has to be a pirate ship, we love it! They love the interactive DVD’s and Luna in particular can be found hunting for the mice behind the screen!

Cat World Magazine feature

With winter now showing it’s head the cats are being kept well entertained by all the birds on the feeders. Our trees are fast losing their leaves and the chickens are having great fun scrabbling around under the leaves for bugs.

The cats are all lovely and warm in their suites and it is so lovely to see them all happy and content, it’s what we wanted to achieve and is so fulfilling. We have had some beautiful and very entertaining guests coming in, each one unique as all cats are. Frankie & Vinnie the gorgeous British Blue’s have had their second stay and kept us busy as their personal entertainers during their holiday. The other firm favourite past time of all of our guests is spider hunting! The spiders come into the garden rooms in search of somewhere warm and dry and become prey, poor things, but cats will be cats!

We were also very fortunate this month to have a two page write up in Cat World magazine, it is on page 30 and can be read here http://www.catworld.co.uk/imag/issue440/index.html. Our hotel is now starting to book up quickly and everyone who comes to see it is very complimentary which is lovely.

We always love showing people around, so even if you do not yet have a trip planned, you are very welcome to come in and meet us – and if you want to make friends with the donkeys, sheep and goats then remember they love digestive biscuits!
