Merry Christmas from Hotel Cat

Well December has arrived and we are flat out here preparing the hotel for Christmas. We have had two rooms refurbished with new wallpaper and tiled floors in the garden rooms and the tiler is preparing the next two. It’s lovely to see the rooms looking so fresh and new again ready for the start of a new year. The hotel works so hard during the year and it definitely deserves some tlc, we will be getting a new video tour done in Spring as all the trees and shrubs that were planted have grown so much and the gardens leading to the hotel are looking lovely.

We had a sad middle of the month as one of the baby deer had to be put to sleep. We found him hung up in the stock fencing early one Saturday morning. His back foot had got caught and although we released him he was struggling to walk. We called out the RSPCA and the most lovely, compassionate man arrived, he assessed the deer but couldn’t decide if his hip was broken or dislocated so called out a local vet. On close examination it was discovered that his hip was actually fractured so the decision was made to put him to sleep. We are devastated to lose one and it’s so sad to just have the three left as I’m sure they can’t understand why he didn’t return to the herd. We are still very blessed that they choose to live on the farm and they make us smile every time we see them.

The donkeys are sunbathing today as it’s beautiful outside. Cookie now wears his rug to help keep him warm as he really suffers when it’s cold. They spend most of the day and night in the big barn, but still like to come out for a wander around if it’s nice weather. We are hoping to rehome some ex commercial chickens this month as there is a rehoming day coming up, both us and the cats love watching the chickens wandering around the gardens. Our oldest chickens are coming up seven and although they don’t lay eggs anymore they have a lovely happy life.

We want to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support over the last year, we love all our wonderful guests and adore looking after them for you. We won’t be sending Christmas cards again this year as we use the money to buy meals for the homeless, I know you will understand.

Wishing you all a wonderful Christmas,

Jackie xx

Happy New Year!

2019 is here and fortunately January seems to be going quite quickly instead of dragging it’s heels! It is a cold but clear day here and we are hoping that there will be no snow for us this year.

We had such an incredibly busy and fun year in 2018, although the building works in the house were very trying, thank goodness they are now finished, never again!

2019 Looks like it is going to be our busiest year yet. We have shown so many new people around the Hotel since the start of the month and everyone is booking dates and they are very enthusiastic which is lovely. Fortunately most of our regular favourites have already secured their places and the diary is full in quite a few places.

My big news this month is that I have chosen the charity which I am going to raise money for by running the London Marathon in April. The charity is the Celia Hammond Animal Trust. I researched a number of charities as I wanted the majority of the money raised to go directly towards the animals and fell for this charity straight away. Please have a look at their website as they are passionate animal lovers who work tirelessly to help and support in everyway they can. I have set up a Just Giving page which is https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jackieferrier  if you have a minute have a read of my story and I will update the page regularly.

The donkeys are all really well and spend the majority of the time in their barn next to the Cat Hotel eating and sleeping! The cats are fascinated by the donkeys and spend hours on their outside cat trees watching them. They are very fat, woolly coated and extremely cuddly and are so lovely to be with, both donkeys and cats are such peaceful animals and the calm effect they give is wonderful, I really don’t know how people cope with working in cities!

We have had a busy January filled with lovely guests who are all warm and snug in their spacious bedrooms. It is always lovely and toasty in the Hotel as the heating is left on 24 hrs a day and it is the perfect place to escape with my book leaving Tim in the house to answer the phone.

My Marathon training is going well and so far to plan. I am actually enjoying the training far more than I thought I would. I have a great friend coaching me and we are increasing mileage weekly. This week we have a 14 mile run on Sunday, last weeks was 12 miles which we did in 1hr 55 minutes. For those who also run we averaged 9.38 pace which I am thrilled with. At the moment I am hoping to complete the Marathon in under 4hrs 30mins, but obviously this is dependant on how training goes and what the weather is like on the day.

Right, I have my book and I’m back up to my gorgeous guests,

Jackie xx

September at Hotel Cat

September already, how did that happen?! Always are busiest month , we call it Silver Tabby and Bengal month as all our regular guest of these two breeds book September. I think at on point we have 3 different families of Silver Tabbies and 3 different families of Bengals staying at the same time. We have had a few first time guests lately including Cyril the Sphinx who has just started his own instagram page, you can find him under Cyril Sphinx. He is just the funniest little man and had us in hysterics with his antics. It’s not a breed I would have considered having had I not met them, but they are the funniest and most loving characters and if we were going to have an indoor cat then they would be my first choice, you could never be bored with a Sphinx around!

The Cat Hotel has been fully booked all summer and we only have limited space left for the rest of the year as even November is really busy. The cats heating is now back on in the evenings and it won’t be long before it has to be on 24hrs. As much as I love summer , I do love the Autumn and the preparation for winter. The hedges around the farm are booked in to be trimmed which always looks so smart and all the logs are being stacked. The donkeys have their hay and straw ready for the cold months, although they do have a small amount in the evenings now as they tell me they are starving?!

Our building works are now in there 11th week and the novelty has worn off! As lovely as the builders are it’s hard work with all the dust and mess, however the end is in sight as they are now plastering the walls and we have a flooring company coming in next week to measure for the finished floor. The cats and dogs are completely unfazed by all the chaos at the back of the house which amazes me. The cats think that the sand has been put there just for them, I just hope cat poo in the cement mix isn’t a bad thing!

We have a lovely group of cats staying at the moment and it is such a joy to be with them. I am off with my book to entertain and provide a lap for them for the rest of the day.

May – our favourite month at Hotel Cat

We love May, it heralds the arrival of summer and everything looks wonderful here at the farm. We have baby birds galore and the bird feeders around the cattery are being filled at least twice a day to keep up with demand! The sheep have now had their thick winter coats removed and are much happier, they look very smart too.

The donkeys are busy shedding their coats and we often see the jackdaws sitting on their backs picking at the loose hairs. Yesterday whilst sat outside I saw a red kite fly over, it’s only the second time we have seen them around here and I do hope they are here to stay.

The cat hotel is really busy and filled with the most wonderful guests, I know I’m biased, but I do believe that we get the best cats staying with us. We have a pair of identical young ginger boys staying here at the moment. They are gangly with lean long bodies and must have purr switches everywhere as when you touch them they purr non stop! It’s lovely to see them so happy and I love watching their crazy antics – I find the outside rugs in all sorts of places where they practice their skidding moves! We also have our first Munchkin kitten, she too has settled straight in and is just gorgeous. We have made her steps so that she is able to climb up on the bed and cat trees. We have a busy summer ahead of us and can’t wait as it’s full of lots of our favourite guests.

Right, back up to play with the cats – enjoy the sunshine everyone 🙂

Merry Christmas from Hotel Cat

We are all so excited about Christmas here at the farm. I have, rather smugly, finished all of my Christmas shopping and have most things wrapped. I can now relax and enjoy the company of the beautiful guests who are now arriving for their Christmas holidays. We have had our busiest ever November and have met a number of new guests who have already booked their second holidays with us, including two of the cutest Siberian kittens who adored cuddles! We have a full hotel all over Christmas and they are all regular guests who we know like they are our own. We shall be spoiling them with a festive lunch and hope that Santa will pay them all a visit as I’m sure they have all been very good all year!

It is very cold here at the moment, but no snow which is a shame as I wanted the young donkeys to experience it for the first time. Our old donkey Cookie now wears his coat as he feels the cold, but the others don’t like wearing them so we only put them on if needed. The donkeys, sheep and goats spend most of their time in their barn when it is cold and are very insistent on regular top ups of hay and straw, bellowing loudly when they see me in the hotel through the windows!

We are getting very booked up for 2018 and already have some dates which are fully booked, mostly in January, February, May and June. If you have any dates which you would like held please get in touch as soon as possible to guarantee a space. There are only two spaces left for Christmas 2018!

We are not sending cards again this year as we are giving to charity, but wish you all a wonderful Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year.

Give all your cats a cuddle from us,

Jackie & Tim xxxx

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year to everyone, may all your hopes and dreams come true in 2017. We have had an extremely busy Christmas, but it was hugely enjoyable due to having such lovely guests to stay. They all had a stocking to open on Christmas morning and then the three Bengals had a great game of ‘who can climb the Christmas tree fastest’!! We are already fully booked for next Christmas with all of our lovely favourites coming to stay.

The donkeys have been such stars over Christmas. Percy accompanied me on a fancy dress morning held at our running club. Our group won first prize as a nativity scene complete with real donkey and Percy was the star of the show. We have started training him and he loves learning new tricks, he waits for me at the gate each day so that he can come out and perform! Our new donkey Misty has settled in well and is always with Charlie, he still pretends he doesn’t like her when I am there, but goes looking for her when he can’t see her.

We rehomed 12 ex commercial birds in early Dec and they are delightful. They are so confident already and will march straight into the house if we leave the door open. The cats adore watching them during the day as they are such entertaining birds.

Our diary is filling up quickly for the year ahead, for some dates in February we are already full. If you have any dates you would like held please let us know soon as this looks like a very busy year. We would like to thank everyone for using us in 2016, we adore all of your cats and feel very privileged to be able to care for them all.

I must go, I have a cat called Harmony who insists that I sit and read with her in the afternoon…….

September over – Autumn arrives

Well, it would appear today that Autumn has arrived. The shorts have been packed away until next year and the jumpers are making an appearance. It has been a fantastic summer at Hotel Cat and we are busy tidying up the outside buildings ready for the winter. The hedges are being cut next week and we are planting new trees around the gardens.

We have had a very busy September with lots of familiar faces coming to stay. It’s funny how the cats know which suite is theirs and how they settle straight back in. We now have the heating back on and the suites are toasty warm in the mornings. We have Enzo and Aston the British Blues staying with us at the moment and Enzo loves to snuggle up under his duvet, you would think he would be too hot, but he loves to snuggle. We also have Ronnie and Reggie the Silver Tabbies, Poppy and Tabitha the Bengals and Florence and Ravello the Silver Tabbies have just gone home. I love the imaginative names, we have always been hopeless at trying to think of a name which is different. We had two cats called Neko in last week in opposite suites, apparently Neko means cat in Japanese, you learn something new everyday!

The donkeys are all really well and just adorable. Their newly refurbished winter accommodation, which is right outside the cats suites, is finished. They now have a concrete base, which will be far easier to keep clean and will help their feet. They are desperate to break into the barn with their winter hay and try daily to find a new way in! They are frequently found now in the paddock by the drive, patiently waiting for someone to give them the fallen apples off the trees.

We have a busy month coming up in October, but we ease down in November, our first month when we have not been fully booked weeks in advance! Bookings are flying in for 2017 and we even have a couple in for 2018 – it also looks like Christmas 2017/2018 is already full…….!

Must go, I have a hotel full of gorgeous guests to entertain, it’s a tough job, but someone has to do it!

Summer at Hotel Cat

Sweep the shorthaired Persian

Sweep on her favourite windowsill

Well, we are supposed to be enjoying summer, but it hasn’t been great so far has it?! Our hay fields are full and we are desperate for a dry spell so that we can start making the hay for the donkeys.

June has been another really busy month with plenty of lovely cats coming and going. At one stage we had four elderly cats in, they were all from different families, the youngest was fifteen and the oldest was twenty. Once these had gone home we had a number of young cats to stay and the variety of personality’s who come to stay is amazing. We had our first ever Sphynx kitten called Kermit who was a complete live wire and kept us all highly entertained, what a lovely breed. We also had two gorgeous Burmese kittens who were amazing and so affectionate. We have also had lots of our regular lovely guests staying and I love knowing all the cats so well and the way they settle straight into the hotel.

We have been taking the donkeys out on walks around the lanes lately and they always make people smile. We hope by next year they will be ready to start their therapy work and spread some joy around care homes and hospices. They are amazing creatures to spend time with, very similar to the cats in that they are very relaxing to be with and they adore a fuss.

Our new cats are settling in really well and I think our old cat Doumy has realised they are staying! She won’t let them go upstairs as that is her territory and she has a bed on the landing so that she can be on guard. Stella, the grey cat, has just started to go outside with us in the garden and she loves it, but Sweep, with her bad eye sight, prefers to live indoors and will go from room to room seeking the sunniest spot. It’s so lovely to have them and they are very happy.

Right, back up to see my lovely guests, I expect it is time for another game with Jax the energetic Bengal!

A beautiful summer and happy cats

We are very fortunate to be living in one of the most beautiful parts of England. We adore the New Forest and it is lovely to see all the young foals chasing each other around. The weather this year has been kind, the rain always seems to start north of us and we do seem to have more than our fair share of sunshine, which keeps both us and the cats happy.

We continue to have the most amazing cats coming to stay and we love them all as they are so individual. The family of Australian Mists are currently staying and are one of the most chilled out breeds we have met. We had our first Persian Chinchilla who was such a sweet girl, who fortunately loved to be groomed and had such an amazing coat. We also have Milo the stunning Bengal cat, he has stayed once before and we adore him. He loves a game and also gives kisses which is the sweetest thing. It’s funny how each week changes, one week we had seven Silver Tabbies staying, the next week we had seven black and whites. I think the best thing about running a cat hotel is meeting all the guests and seeing how well they settle. I have another golden oldie coming back to stay for a month in August. Freddie has stayed with us before and is a real gentleman, the older ones just like us to go and sit with them and chat, occasionally they will play, but most of all they just want company. We have had lots of long term guests and it’s amazing how quickly they settle in. It’s always important that they have plenty of familiar thing from home in their suite, as this is very reassuring to a cat in an unfamiliar surrounding.

We are always more than happy to show you around before you book and will hold the suite for you until you have visited. We do ask for appointments as we keep the bottom gate locked and do not know you are there when we are with the cats.
